May 2012Norwich teenager to spend part of summer holidays as a medical volunteer in India
While many college students will be enjoying a relaxing summer, one Notre Dame High School sixth-former will be volunteering in rural India. Nyasha Ngwendere, 17, will be flying to the city of Madurai in southern India to take part in a medical volunteering programme with Projects Abroad. As well as experiencing the culture of India, she will be placed in the care of a variety of doctors of different types.

A sixth form student from Bovington is preparing to embark on an African adventure that will see her working with orphaned children. Hannah Moore, 17, will head off to Ghana on completing her A-levels this summer after being inspired by a schoolfriend from the West African country.

Gap year specialists Projects Abroad have seen a 30 per cent rise in people enrolling on volunteering placements this year, while youth travel agents STA have seen a 35 per cent increase in the number of youngsters booking gap year travel experiences.

Moira Cox, aged 19, of Framingham Road, is going to Asia with top global volunteer organisation Projects Abroad. “This is a big challenge for me personally,” said Moira. “I really hope my trip is a big success.”

Rothesay Academy pupil Sophie Duncan’s bid to raise the money she needs to spend two weeks as a charity worker in India this summer has started just swimmingly. The first in a series of fund-raising events saw Sophie complete a two-mile sponsored swim at Rothesay Leisure Pool on Thursday evening in just 90 minutes.

Two teenagers from the Chester area are preparing to head off to Vietnam on a charity mission. Dona Kumar and Felicity Elsegood, both 18, will be volunteering with the global organisation Projects Abroad.
The duo, both King’s School sixth formers, will work in Hanoi as part of a project called Care and Community for two weeks.

Sophie to volunteer as midwife
Frome teenager Sophie Willis is volunteering to help with midwifery on a trip to Tanzania. The former Selwood and Frome Community College pupil will be working with Projects Abroad. Sophie, of Foxcote Gardens, said: "My dream is to become a midwife and I am studying an access to higher education course to enable me to go to university to study midwifery in September."

Dr Peter Slowe, Director of Projects Abroad, said, "The record number of A-level passes that are being awarded has resulted in 700,000 students seeking only 480,000 university places.
January 2012Gap year students becoming increasingly reliant on bank of mum and dad
Students are increasingly turning to the "bank of mum and dad" to fund their gap year travel. Nearly half of 17-25-year-olds look to their parents for more money if they run out during trips, a survey by currency company Moneycorp found. And 9% of these young travellers are lucky enough to have their entire trip paid for by their parents.
