Care & Conservation in Costa Rica If you're interested in working with children, joining a conservation project, practicing your Spanish skills, and living in a gorgeous country, then look no further than this trip! Costa Rica is one of the most stable and well developed countries in Central America, creating a perfect mix for volunteers who want to experience Latin America.

Volunteers can choose to spend a week on both the Conservation and Care projects or spend the two weeks just at the Conservation project. Please let us know which you prefer when you apply.

During your time at the conservation project at Barra Honda National Park you will be given an extensive tour of the park, including the caves that the park is famous for. You'll also be involved in a variety of on-going projects which may include reforestation work, a mammal study, a butterfly and bat study, painting buildings and maintaining and restoring trails.

The volunteers going on to join the Care project will then spend the second week working at one of our care projects in Liberia, Projects Abroad’s main base in Costa Rica. Volunteers can help out by playing games with the children and giving them attention they would otherwise not receive. There is also the opportunity to provide some basic English lessons if you'd like to take part in classes. You will work at the one of the care centres during the day and your evenings will be filled with activities ranging from dance lessons to quizzes. Living in Liberia provides a great opportunity to speak Spanish with local people if you’re interested in improving or picking up some language skills.

    Care in Moldova

    Sunday July 18th – Saturday July 31st
    Sunday August 1st – Saturday August 14th

    Care in Moldova

If you have plenty of energy and enthusiasm, you can help to give Moldovan children a summer holiday to remember. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe and many of the children we work with here are orphans or have special needs. While they are housed and looked after, they do not receive much attention or affection - which is where you come in.

Working at a summer camp on the outskirts of Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, you will organise games and activities for groups of young children, and teach them a little English through fun, informal lessons. Volunteers are welcome to use their own ideas and interests, whether your strong point is in sports, music or arts and crafts. While you work, you will also be learning about life in a rarely-visited country with a fascinating history.

At the weekend we will organise a barbecue party on the beach-like banks of the River Bic. This is a great chance to socialise with other volunteers and Moldovans, as well as to try a few of the local delicacies.

Volunteers are needed in Jamaica to work on a 2 Week Special Community Building Project, helping to repair and build homes in Manchester. ADRA International operates as an independent humanitarian agency focusing on development and relief work. The collaboration of Projects Abroad Jamaica and ADRA will result in changing the lives of the poor and needy by repairing homes in Manchester. Come and be a part of this life-changing experience by making a valuable contribution to the improved standard of living of those in need.

    Healthcare in Jamaica

    Sunday July 18th – Saturday July 31st

    Healthcare in Jamaica

In the land of Usain Bolt, Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley there is an overflow of adolescent talent in sports, academics, creative arts and science. However, even in this country teeming with talent there is a great need for these same adolescents to be taught and guided into proper health practices not only by adults but also from their peers.

The Manchester Day Camp provides an opportunity where volunteers can learn more about health issues in Jamaica and within the Caribbean affecting adults and adolescents.

The 2 Week Special volunteers will be part of the Day Camp coordinated by the Manchester Health Department in partnership with Projects Abroad. The camp will be held at the Manchester Comprehensive Clinic. The aim of the camp is to provide teens with a creative outlet for the summer while using the opportunity to educate this age group about managing all aspects of their health. There is a team of staff in place that includes the Camp Director, Camp Counsellors and volunteers that will facilitate discussions and activities aimed at educating adolescents about healthy lifestyles and seeking to effect behaviour change. External speakers are also invited to lead talks on specific health issues such as, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, asthma, sickle cell and heart disease in adolescence.

Included in the camp are many practical activities that make the educational topics fun and interesting. These include songs, dance, drama, visual arts and movies. The theme for this camp is “Putting health education into practice”. What better way for you to spend your summer than to come and share with other teens your experiences and in return learn from them. If you are interested in healthcare or if you are just interested in being a part of helping to promote healthy living then this is a great opportunity for you.

In addition to the Day Camp volunteers will have the opportunity to tour the Mandeville Regional Hospital, the largest hospital in Manchester. It has four main departments, medicine, general surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. It also has a critical care unit and an accident and emergency and outpatient clinic.

Volunteers will also receive a one day workshop about actively taking and monitoring vital signs, first aid and the Jamaican healthcare system. You will then have the chance to use your new skills on a day spent with a community outreach mobile clinic based in a poor community.

On the weekend you will go on a trip to one of the island’s famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known. A certificate of participation will be given to all volunteers who take part in this project.

You will be taken to Terelj National Park where you will be able to see wild horses and ride a camel. The sights are spectacular! You will also get to experience a traditional Mongolian barbecue, which is a great time to socialise with the other volunteers and local staff.

    Sports in Ghana

    Sunday July 18th – Saturday July 31st
    Sunday August 1st – Saturday August 14th

    Sports in Ghana

Spend two weeks in friendly, wild West Africa. Use your sporting talents to teach new skills and train children at a football project in the Akuapem Hills. Ghanaians are passionate about football and you will spend your first week based at our sports placement in Accra learning football coaching techniques before heading to the semi-rural Akuapen Hills to coach football to local children.

Preparing the children for a local match, which you can then help to referee, will show off your coaching skills. By interacting with the children on a personal level, you will develop their skills and confidence while having fun playing football at the same time.

On the weekend, we'll take you to Cape Coast to visit Kakum Rainforest Reserve where you can hike through the jungle and experience the canopy walkway high in the trees. If Accra's football team, Hearts of Oak, is playing we'll take you along.

South Africa 2 week special - World Cup Football

Sunday June 27th to Saturday July 10th

South Africa 2 week special - World Cup Football All of South Africa is excited about the World Cup. Here is a chance to catch the local version of World Cup Fever. In the townships of southern Cape Town, there are tens of thousands of children with a passion for football. Projects Abroad volunteers are needed to train and coach some of them for our World Cup simulation tournament! You will be asked to help us split the children up into different teams, named after different countries represented in the World Cup. Then you will have the chance to help prepare one of the teams for the great day.

With the help of our tournament manager, Jason Davis, you will be asked to train up your team, improving their football skills, including teamwork and fair play! You should watch some of the World Cup games with them on television, and do some analysis. With a bit of luck some of the children will pick up hints about passing, tackling, positioning, scoring, defending and goalkeeping from Rooney, Essien, Messi, Ronaldo and the rest ...

The essence of this project will be spending time on a football pitch providing encouragement for the disadvantaged children training with you. They will all be on holiday from school and many of them will be idle. We need volunteers to channel their energy into football, the sport they enjoy the most.

At the weekend, we'll make plans around the football matches, but you'll definitely get to see Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope.

    Teaching in Jamaica

    Sunday July 11th – Saturday July 24th

    Teaching in Jamaica

The focus of this 2 Week Special teaching project is to promote the concept of holistic learning and education; through the provision of activities that expose children not only to academic study but also to areas of drama, language, arts, music, technology and sports.

The McIntosh Memorial Primary School runs an integrated Summer School Programme each year. Teaching volunteers will work for four hours a day and are needed to assist in teaching core courses for remedial students, namely; basic reading and mathematics. However volunteers may also be involved in geography, cultural exchange through song and dance, arts and crafts and physical education.

Volunteers should have a love of children and be patient, tolerant and flexible. If you have any specific skills please let us know, however, no experience is required to help on this project. As volunteers you should be willing to become fully integrated in all aspects of the summer school and lead an activity if requested or assist the teacher in charge.

Activities will include; treasure hunts, teaching basic literacy, teaching sports and sportsmanship, teaching drama, music, song and dance, improving the class environment through crafts and cultural activities.

To conclude the Summer School a Parents Open Day will be held where parents can come in and view their children’s work and meet the volunteers. We will also put on a concert for the children to showcase their song and dance skills.

On the weekend you will go on a trip to one of the island’s famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known. Each volunteer will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the programme.
