What will I do on this project?
While interns are not allowed to take part in patient procedures, there are still many things to do and learn on this internship. At your dentistry placement in Jamaica, you will:
- Observe local dental staff as they go about their daily work
- Assist with a range of basic tasks in the dental clinic
- Take part in dental outreaches or school visits which benefit the local community
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Observe local dental staff as they go about their daily work
On this internship, you’ll learn by observing staff and asking them questions about different treatments and techniques. The staff you will shadow include dental nurses, dentists, and dental surgeons. You’ll get to witness everything that goes on in the working day of a dental clinic, including minor and major surgical procedures.
Assist with a range of basic tasks in the dental clinic
As an extra pair of hands, you will be able to help out around the clinic. Tasks you may get involved in include patient registration and screening, or preparing materials for dental procedures. You might also find yourself providing patients with information about oral hygiene.
Take part in dental outreaches or school visits which benefit the local community
There is also the opportunity to get involved in healthcare work that benefits the local community. You may find yourself participating in dental outreaches organised by the Ministry of Health. Or you can take part in mobile dental clinics in rural areas that don’t have permanent dental facilities.
Our interns regularly conduct independent outreach sessions as well. These sessions take place in the form of presentations at local schools or community centres. They focus on topics such as dental health and oral hygiene.
Where in Jamaica will I work?
You will gain dentistry work experience in Mandeville, Jamaica. You’ll work in the dental clinic of a local health centre.
While Mandeville is fairly quiet, it does have all the modern amenities that you might need. These include convenience stores, banks, and restaurants.
During your time off on the weekends, you can explore further afield. Visit beautiful beach resorts, soak in the local reggae music scene, or take advantage of the natural wonders with a hiking or scuba diving trip.
Volunteering for Professionals
This project is also perfect for qualified professionals. With your skills backing up our ongoing efforts, we can make an even bigger difference together. We'll match you to the placement where your skills are needed most.
This means you can share your training and and knowledge with others. You can work hand-in-hand with our partner organisations and local communities to support sustainable development.
If you have relevant skills or qualifications, read more about how you can make use of them with Projects Abroad.
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
