Is a Medical internship in India right for me?

Our medical programme in India provides a comprehensive insight into professional medicine with immense learning opportunities. From beginners in year one who have an interest but no experience in the field to advanced fifth-year students looking for specific specialisations, we have all the bases covered on our medical placements in India.

These programmes are ideal for medical or healthcare science students looking for practical experience abroad. As a student, learning comes to life as you observe doctors and explore different specialisations. You’ll get first-hand insight into medical practices in developing countries and actively learn from professionals in the field.

You’ll have a medical supervisor for the duration of your internship. They’ll ensure you get the most out of your medical work experience in India, and that you’re well looked after. Language is also less of a barrier as medical teams are able to converse in English. This experience will add real-world experience to your CV and boost your skillset on university applications, as you’ll be able to gain a verified work reference.

You’ll be able to choose which departments you’d like to work in. This means you can pursue your interests if there’s a particular area of medicine that you’d like to focus on. Or you can choose to rotate through different departments for a broader experience. The longer you stay, the more departments you’ll get to spend time in.

You can join this internship from two weeks onwards. It’s available year-round, so you can choose a time that suits your schedule. Please note that you need to be a first-year healthcare student with basic knowledge of human anatomy to join.

Medical interns observe surgery in India.

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Observe local doctors and medical staff

Your main role in this internship is purely observational. You’ll spend your days learning from doctors and other medical staff. You’ll have the chance to witness consultations and procedures and ask questions about what you’ve seen. Wherever possible, doctors will take the time to explain what they’re doing, and how they came to the diagnosis. You’ll have the opportunity to visit many different departments and observe doctors diagnose and treat a vast range of cases.

Rotate between various hospital departments like general medicine, oncology and paediatrics

During your medical placement in India, you’ll have the opportunity to observe twelve different specialisations, depending on your interests and the needs of the hospital. You may assist children in paediatrics, expectant mothers in gynaecology or laboratory tests in radiology. The longer you stay, the more of these departments you’ll be able to observe in.

Attend medical lectures and workshops

As technology and medicine are always improving, so will you. By attending medical presentations, you’ll stay ahead of the game on the latest technology and best practices in medicine. The hospital doctors and nurses will be by your side every step of the way to introduce new information and medical techniques which will improve your skills.

What types of medical placements are available in India?

All medical interns will get exposure to a wide range of patients and cases, all under the watchful guidance of a professional and caring team of doctors and nurses.

You placements may be in any of the following departments:

  • General Medicine
  • Paediatrics & Neonatology
  • Imaging & Radiology
  • Emergency
  • Anaesthesiology & C Care
  • Oncology
  • Cardiology
  • Neurology/Neurosurgery
  • Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics

Please note that you’ll only be able to spend time in one or two departments if you’re staying for two to three weeks. The longer you stay, the more departments you’ll be able to rotate through.

Where in India will I be working?

You’ll have the opportunity to work at a large private hospital in the city of Kochi in Kerala. Due to the growing presence of private hospitals, it’s competitive to receive a placement at one of these hospitals, therefore the quality of doctors has improved immensely. Kerala is the only state in India which has a reputation for quality public healthcare and medical services, which is remarkable.

The city itself is sprawling with people going about their day-to-day activities. Simply walk along the waterfront promenade and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with museums, abundant art and the most fragrant spices found along the market side. There are also more modern places like the local mall, an ice rink and restaurants that serve the most delicious dal and fish curry.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

Our projects are based in Kochi. When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our India Arrival Procedures page

A typical day on the Medicine internship in India

After waking up in the morning and enjoying a delicious breakfast, you’ll travel to your placement. On your first day, our staff will accompany you to show you the way.

A typical day will run from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 am - 12.30 pm, and then from 2 pm - 4 pm. However, these hours may vary. The exact schedule will be discussed during your induction.

The specifics of your day will vary according to which placement you choose, and which department you’re in. In general, you’ll follow the doctors in the department as they complete their rounds, update charts, review case files, and assess patients for admission.

We run regular workshops for all our medical interns. Here, you’ll have the chance to ask local doctors questions about procedures you’ve seen, or simply find out more about medical practice in India. They’ll also provide you with basic training.

At the end of your working day, it’s time to relax. Swap stories about your day over dinner with your fellow interns and other volunteers, or spend time getting to know them at one of our regular socials.

What are the goals of this Medicine internship in India?

This Medicine internship in India is focused on providing interns with valuable, real-world experience from doctors and medical professionals.

Because of the highly proficient medical system in Kerala, especially in the private sector where you’ll be working, you’ll gain valuable insights into high-quality treatment on a global scale. You’ll observe how to diagnose, treat and promote good health in local communities in India while gathering global experience to create an impact in your own community.

As the cross-cultural sharing of knowledge is essential in our programmes, you’ll learn from skilled local medical staff and in turn, share your personal experiences with them. It’s a wonderful way to not only learn about healthcare practice in a developing country but to discover everyday life abroad.

Your participation and contributions during your Medical internship in India will be an educational experience and we can’t wait for you to join.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad travellers during your stay in India. This is a great way to get to know each other, share experiences, and explore your surroundings during your free time together.

The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your programme fees include three meals a day.
