Your Nursing placement in India will offer great insights into the field of nursing while working alongside medical professionals at private hospitals providing optimal care. It is designed for participants of all levels. As someone who is interested in working in the field of nursing, with no experience, you’ll learn how to provide and administer care to a variety of patients. For students or professionals already working in the field, you can shadow a variety of departments and greater understand your ability to provide quality treatment abroad. 

During your Nursing internship in India, you’ll be able to choose which departments you’d like to work in. The longer you stay, the more departments you can invest your time in. If there’s a particular area of nursing that you’d like to focus on, whether paediatrics, cardiology, neurology or gynaecology, you can be placed in that department. Or you can choose to rotate through the different departments for a broader experience. 

This experience is a fantastic way to boost your CV and prepare for a future career in professional healthcare. You will gain cross-cultural insights into international medicine with an ability to assess foreign illnesses and their treatment.

You can join this nursing internship opportunity in India from two weeks onwards. It’s available year-round, so you can choose a time that suits your schedule. Please note that you need to be studying nursing and have a basic knowledge of human anatomy.

By observing local doctors and nurses on their rounds, you’ll learn a great deal about healthcare practice in this developing country. We’ll teach you about the particular illnesses and conditions that occur in this region, as well as how they are diagnosed and treated.

On your Nursing placement in India, you’ll get to observe the work of medical professionals in different departments. You can choose which departments depending on your interests and the needs of the hospital. This is a great opportunity to see if specific specialisations intrigue you and if you’d want to pursue it in your healthcare career.

Our Nursing volunteers are always greatly appreciated for their skills and contributions to the communities. As technology and medicine are always improving, so will you. Where in India will I be working?


You’ll have the opportunity to work at a large private hospital in the city of Kochi in Kerala, which is located in Southwest India, near the coast. Kerala is known for its quality public healthcare services and the quality of doctors and nurses are always improving.

The city is teeming with people going from place to place in Kerala. There is plenty to do during your time in India. You can visit the waterfront promenade, barter at the local markets or sample some of the most fragrant Indian food in the country. Over the weekend, you might find yourself enjoying the warm sun on the beach or learning how to traditional dance.

A typical day on the Nursing internship in India

After enjoying breakfast, you’ll travel to the hospital where you’ll be working. Our staff will go with you on your first day to show you how the transport system work and to make sure your comfortable during your stay.

On this internship, you’ll work from Monday to Friday. Working hours will vary, but generally you’ll work from 8.30am - 12.30pm, with a two hour break for lunch. Your afternoon shift will run from 2pm - 4pm.

You’ll shadow local nurses on their rounds throughout your day. We also run medical workshops. These workshops are a great way for you to learn more about healthcare practices in India. They’re run by a local doctor, and focus on common medical issues in the area. This is another opportunity for you to ask questions and get clarification about things you’ve observed at the hospital.

Once your shift is over, you’ll have the chance to relax and explore. Go out for dinner with your fellow interns and talk about what you’ve done over a plate of curry, or relax at home. Admire the beautiful architecture, watch a cricket match at a local stadium, and wander through the bustling markets.

What are the aims of this project?

The aim of this project is to provide interns with an educational work experience.

Our goal is to facilitate the cross-cultural exchange of knowledge. You’ll observe skilled local nurses, while sharing your own experiences. It’s an excellent way to gain insight into healthcare practice in a developing country. You’ll also learn about prevalent diseases in the area, and how they’re diagnosed and treated.

Kerala has a highly proficient medical system, especially in the private sector where you’ll work. This means you’ll get to see high-quality treatment and learn from some of the most skilled medical staff. You’ll observe diagnosis, treatment and the promotion of good health in local communities in India.

Learning from other cultures is a great way to share knowledge and experience. It’s also a great way to learn about the healthcare system of another country while getting to know their culture too.

Food and accommodation

You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad travellers during your stay in India. This is a great way to get to know each other, share experiences, and explore your surroundings during your free time together.
