Is volunteer construction work in Nepal right for me?
If you want to travel abroad and volunteer for a good cause our construction programme for groups in Nepal is perfect for you. You’ll make a tangible difference and give Nepali children the chance to continue learning in safe classrooms.
Don’t have any building experience? No problem! We have a team of skilled masons, architects, and engineers ready to assist you. Our team of workers ensure that the work is guided, safe. The hands-on experience gives you on-the-ground insight into basic building techniques.
You’ll get to experience days on a real building site and learn from the staffs’ expertise while asking any questions you may have. This volunteering experience makes a great addition to your CV and is a good talking point when you apply for a job.
This house building project is made especially for volunteers to work as a group. We also have a set itinerary in place to make planning your day easier.
The project runs all year round, you can start on any day, and it’s fully supervised. So all you need to do is decide on some dates, complete our application form with a £195 deposit and we’ll take care of the rest.
What will I do on this project?
The bigger the group of volunteers, the faster we’re able to build more classrooms for young children in Nepal. You’ll be working as a team with the other volunteers so there will be other enthusiastic people to give you hand. This will ensure you have a big impact in a short amount of time. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do:
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Build classrooms from the ground up
You’ll get your hands dirty as soon as you arrive in Nepal! With the guidance of a supervisor you’ll need to use those muscles to dig foundation trenches, mix cement and concrete, and lay bricks. If you’re interested in becoming an architect, engineer, or mason, or if you have some experience already, it’s the perfect opportunity to talk to the experts on site about building techniques or ask for career advice.
Renovate existing classrooms
Children should learn in a fun, engaging, colourful environment. With that said, one of your main tasks will be renovating new classrooms. Unleash your creativity and paint walls from ceiling to floor or create murals of the ABCs or 123s. Your art will brighten the classroom and may even be used by the teacher for lessons at a later time.
Take part in activities with the young children
You’ll be able to play with some of the children who will be learning in the classroom you’re building. You can also share a bit more about yourself and show them parts of your culture. Perhaps even learn some Nepali from the kids and take home a few cultural quirks.
Experience Nepali culture during excursions and trips
Prepare for a fun, jam-packed schedule full of rewarding work and opportunities that will make your time in Nepal among your most memorable! You can enjoy a weekend trip to Pokhara and visit the ancient temple of Changu Narayan. Don’t forget to make the most of the new culture and immerse yourself by shopping around in Nepal for traditional clothing and souvenirs, or learning Nepali during language classes.
Where in Nepal will I be working?
You’ll be staying in the bustling city of Kathmandu during this building volunteering Team Trip. Take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to live and work in Nepal, home to the Himalayas.
Most of your short term project will see you working at school building sites to rebuild and renovate classrooms. You will stay in safe and comfortable accommodation organised by Projects Abroad.
If you’re eager to go out and explore the cultural and tourist side of Nepal during your volunteering trip you’re in luck because this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Your schedule is loaded with quiz nights, a chance to souvenir shop, a weekend trip to Pokhara, and so much more!
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The aim of this project is to build classrooms for schools destroyed during the earthquake that struck in 2015. Thanks to the help of more than 500 volunteers we had built 96 classrooms by May 2017. Our combined efforts ensured that more than 2,000 children could get back to the books in safe classrooms. What a feat!
Even now, we’re still sending volunteers to Nepal to build classrooms which will become places where young students learn and thrive. Your short volunteer building project in Nepal will leave a visible and positive impact in the local Nepali community and in the lives of the young children long after you’ve left.
“I felt so grateful to all Projects Abroad volunteers for helping out our school during such a difficult time. I also don’t have a word to thank them. I have seen them working so hard in the heat and rain to complete the school. I will always be grateful for all the volunteers of Projects Abroad,” said Sunrise School Principal, Mr. Surendra Maharjan.
Lastly, this project is also about giving you the opportunity to travel safely to a unique destination and make new friends from other parts of the globe. Come and join us this summer!
Agriculture & Farming MANAGEMENT PLANS
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. These allow us to properly plan the work of our staff and volunteers. More importantly, they help us evaluate our achievements and impact each year. Read more about our Management Plans.
