The skyline of Shanghai plays the backdrop to volunteers' experience working in China.

Volunteering in China

Support local communities while experiencing modern and traditional life in China

Volunteer in China with Projects Abroad and help make a difference in one of the most rapidly developing countries in the world. You’ll contribute to ongoing work that supports the development of disadvantaged communities.

You can teach English to children at rural schools, or help care for the elderly or disabled. Or work with experienced conservationists at a breeding centre for the vulnerable Giant Pandas. You can also learn directly from business professionals at local and international companies, or use this opportunity to learn Mandarin.

Depending on what volunteer work in China you do with us, you’ll be based in Chengdu or Shanghai. We have an office in each city with full-time staff, who you can call 24/7 if you need help.

There is plenty to see and do in these urban jungles. You can visit the many buddhist temples and the pristine city parks. Or watch the opera, and try Chinese street food at the many local markets. Of course, no trip is complete without a visit to the Great Wall of China.

Where we are based in China

While volunteering in China, you could find yourself working in either Chengdu or Shanghai.

Chengdu

What some people describe as an average city with no distinguishing features, others see as a gem that has yet to be appreciated. You’ll find traditional tea houses mixing famous brews, vendors selling homemade crafts on every corner, and a host of after-work activities.

Chengdu is a peaceful city with the perfect mix of old and new, rural and urban. If it is the Giant Panda you have come to China to see, you are definitely in the right place!

Shanghai

With its iconic city skyline, bustling city streets, and endless supply of art and entertainment, is comes as no surprise that Shanghai is one of the most populated cities in the world. With over 24 million people living within its borders, the city is constantly teeming with people as they go about their day between the many high-rise buildings and skyscrapers.

AIRPORT PICKUP, FLIGHTS AND VISAS

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our China Arrival Procedures page.
