If you are not an elective student or would rather take part in our standard Midwifery projects, please see our Midwifery Projects page. You can also see our full range of Electives for students of other healthcare-related subjects on our Medical Electives page.

Projects Abroad has over 20 years practice in collaborating with medical professionals. We have experienced staff who are able to liaise with your university to ensure that your placement meets your requirements. We arrange your accommodation, meals and insurance and our in-country staff are there to support you and make sure your time overseas is a success.

Taking your Elective Placement in Midwifery with Projects Abroad

You will be placed in a hospital or clinic that has a specialist maternity unit, or in a specialist maternity hospital. Here you will be assigned a qualified supervisor who will be on hand to organise your work and answer any of your questions. You will normally work here from Monday to Friday, observing staff and helping where possible. You will then have your weekends free to explore your chosen destination and meet other students and volunteers.

As you will be working in a developing country, you may find midwifery practice is not what you are used to at home. Facilities can be under-funded or under-resourced and may lack sufficient staff. However, what you will experience are highly dedicated and caring staff who work hard to ensure the women are supported as best they can though birth, and that their babies are well cared for.

Deadlines for Application

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
