Teach English Abroad
Are you interested in Teaching English abroad? Projects Abroad offers volunteers the opportunity to do just that - teach English to students in developing countries around the world. This is a great way to make a positive difference in disadvantaged communities while immersing yourself in a new culture.
Projects Abroad work with a number of different institutions, ranging from schools and universities to kindergartens and Care centres. You could find yourself taking classes, as well as assisting local teachers with their lessons.
You don’t have to be a qualified teacher to join these placements! All that is required is a good level of spoken English and an enthusiasm to teach.
Why teaching English is so important
English language competency is a beneficial, even necessary skill in today’s world, and knowledge of the language is often a springboard into a good career. Your role as a volunteer is to help improve the future prospects of your pupils, by contributing to our long-term development goals in the country.
The local teachers are often very capable of teaching the structural aspects of the English language - such as the grammar - but do not use the correct intonation or pronunciation, because they lack the confidence of a native speaker. As a result, your work will mainly focus on improving the conversational abilities of your students.
If you’d like to teach other subjects apart from English, take a look at our alternative Teaching options.
Teaching English Abroad – What will I do?
Volunteers will work alongside local teachers, assisting them with various tasks.
Duties may include:
- Planning activities
- Working with students to improve their conversational skills
- Playing English games
- Teaching lessons
- Helping with general classroom tasks
- Providing extracurricular courses
The amount of timetabled English lessons per week that you will teach varies depending on the country and even the individual schools.
Volunteers start out working as a teaching assistant, and once you’ve built up enough confidence and got to know the class better, you can teach your own lessons. Some volunteers are tasked with focusing on a small group of students who are falling behind and need extra help. After school hours, you can work on lesson planning for the next day and in some cases run English classes for the local teachers.
We can tailor your Teaching experience according to your confidence levels and experience, so do let us know what you’d prefer when you apply!
In order to help you make the most of your Teaching experience, we provide volunteers with access to a Teaching database. This database will allow you to share lesson plans and download useful teaching resources to help you on your placement. In many destinations we also run regular Teaching workshops so you can share ideas with fellow volunteers.
With creativity and dedication, you will be able to provide children with much-needed educational support to help improve their English language abilities!
