Arriving in Ghana, you’ll be met by Projects Abroad staff who will help you settle into your new surroundings before starting your project. Over the next seven days, you will head out on a tour of Accra, take a language lesson in Twi, and participate in cultural activities such as a traditional drumming and dance lesson, and much more.

Delve into community initiatives as you meet with a lawyer and get to know the students from Jamestown Gbekebii High School. During your interactions, learn about human rights issues from different perspectives and their impact.

Engage in debates and discussions as you exchange perspectives, developing your understanding of human rights through personal experiences. Use your new knowledge to present a workshop to the local Girl Achievers group, spreading awareness of human rights and empowering them to become the next generation of educated and influential women.

Next, visit the Cape Coast Castle and learn about Ghana’s history of slavery and recognise the resilience of local communities through difficult times. Finish your first week soaking in Ghana’s natural beauty with trips to Kakum National Park and Aburi Gardens.

In week two, you’ll meet the staff and students at Tore Eikeland Elementary School. While here, you’ll contribute to the school’s aims and objectives through greening projects. This might include planting trees, clearing space, and assisting with permaculture initiatives which you will work on alongside the local students to complete. Through collaboration, you’ll get to know each other and take part in honest and insightful discussions about social justice, responsibility, and youth empowerment.

Further your knowledge of tribal life by spending an evening with the local chief. Find out about tribal culture, leadership, and politics before taking part in a traditional Ghanaian cooking class. You’ll also learn about sustainable agriculture and nutrition this week, and release some energy with an evening of football with local children.

Explore a local cocoa farm and discover more about life as a farmer, and the cocoa industry as a global industry. Reflect on the part you play in this cycle as a consumer back at home, and how you can help create change as a global citizen. Round off your time in Ghana with a relaxing cruise across Lake Volta.

• In Ghana, there is a system of tribal government in addition to the national government
• Lake Volta is the world’s largest man-made lake by area. It’s 250 miles long and covers 3,283 square miles, nearly 4% of Ghana’s total area
• Ghana boasts Elmina Castle, the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. It was built by the Portuguese in 1482
• In some parts of Ghana, citizens honour the deceased with elaborate coffins that may be found in various shapes to represent what the deceased loved
• Lake Bosumtwi is considered to be a sacred place. This lake does not have outlets or inlets and is only fed by rain
• In the design of the Ghanaian flag, the red represents the blood of Africans who have struggled, the gold stripe represents the wealth of the earth, the green stripe represents vegetation, and the black star is representative of the people
• The Akan tribe makes up more than 45% of Ghana’s population
