Volunteer in Fiji

Soak in the stunning tropical scenery of Fiji while supporting disadvantaged communities

Volunteer in Fiji with Projects Abroad and take part in projects designed to address the needs of local communities. Experience life in this stunning Pacific island while supporting ongoing efforts to help people in disadvantaged areas. Lonely Planet has rated our Projects as the best for sustainable travel in Fiji.

You can join our internationally-recognised Shark Conservation Project, which conducts valuable research about one of the ocean’s most feared and misunderstood predators. You can also support the educational development of young children in under-resourced daycares. Or, immerse yourself fully in the Fijian culture by spending time in a traditional village.

You’ll be living on the largest island, Viti Levu. Our projects are based in Pacific Harbour towards the South of the island. While volunteering in Fiji, you’ll receive 24/7 support from Projects Abroad staff.

Fiji offers visitors some incredible travel opportunities. You can go trekking in the dramatic highland interiors, and bask on the picture-perfect beaches for which Fiji is famous. Experience their colourful festivals, hop between islands on a boat, and scuba dive in crystal-clear waters. You’re spoilt for choice!

Friendly and welcoming staff

For my required Education Internship, I wanted to go abroad to a fascinating country with a unique culture. With a little research, I came across Projects Abroad and their placement in Fiji. The staff were incredibly friendly and quick to respond to my needs required for academic credit.

Having your dive course included and scheduled for you (as well as transportation to and from the dive shop and a packed lunch) was such an incredible benefit to the program. I felt safe and confident throughout my dive course aided by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable dive instructors employed at the dive shop partnered with Projects Abroad, Beqa Adventure Divers.

Never before had I encountered such levels of respect towards elders from children. The pupils I taught at Dratabu Village Primary School were the happiest and most enthusiastic children I have ever met.

Mark M

I decided to join the Shark Conservation Project in Fiji because of my love for sharks and marine conservation. I find sharks a truly fascinating group of animals, and I have always been keen to study them.

Sarah S

Having spent many years studying, I was looking for some hands-on experience in the field and thought combining this experience with travelling would be a great way to celebrate my graduation.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been an environmental activist. (…) So when I found Projects Abroad, I knew it’d be perfect for me.

The lead up and preparation to my placement in Fiji was made very smooth by the Projects Abroad staff, who were always there to answer any questions or queries that I had. The Projects Abroad website and personal web page they set up for you clearly displays everything you need to know about your trip from visa information to climate. Having so much information so clearly displayed, and at such easy reach, left both my parents and myself feeling very comfortable.

From the moment I arrived, I could hardly contain my excitement. As I stepped off the plane, the Projects Abroad team greeted me. Being the first to arrive out of the volunteers, I sat restlessly in awe at the fact that I travelled all the way to Fiji on my own. Despite my parents initial apprehension of the distance, all the help from my volunteer advisor in the weeks before made getting to Fiji a breeze.

Kushbu L

I’m a young mother currently in my first year of university. After the first day of university, on the homepage of my university website was the advertisement for an international scholarship. I was dreaming!

Map & Location

Dive into Fiji, an archipelago of more than 330 islands in the South Pacific. With sandy beaches, blue water, and lush rainforest, it’s the very vision of the tropical paradise in your imagination.

But it’s more than that. Fiji is a melting pot of culture, with influences from Polynesia, India, and Europe. With ancient villages and even older traditions dating back 3,500 years, it is steeped in history and culture — a perfect escape for water sports, relaxation, and cultural discovery.

Nadi

Nadi, on the western coast of Viti Levu, is a lively town of around 42,000 residents and a major transport hub for Fiji. It offers a tropical climate with warm temperatures and plenty of places to make the most of it.

The colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple is a prominent landmark in the town due to its large Hindu population. Nadi also provides easy access to the stunning beaches and turquoise waters of nearby islands, marking it high on the bucket list of beach lovers.

Pacific Harbour

The small town of Pacific Harbour, on the southern coast of Viti Levu, is a haven for thrill seekers and beach lovers alike. It has easy access to all the essentials and benefits from a tropical climate with warm temperatures and sunshine year-round.

Pacific Harbour is ideal for sun seekers, with world-class water sports, stunning beaches, and incredible natural beauty. Though it is home to only 2,000 residents, there’s plenty of places to eat, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Your Arrival Made Easy

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Fiji Arrival Procedures page.
