Volunteer in Kenya

Give back to disadvantaged communities while surrounded by the African savannah

Volunteer in Kenya with Projects Abroad and take part in projects that work to address the needs of disadvantaged local communities. You’ll experience life in this vibrant country and take part in cultural exchange, while surrounded by gorgeous scenery.

Support teachers and promote early childhood development, or take part in community outreaches on our medical internships. You can also get involved in vital conservation work, conducting research on the critically endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe.

Our Conservation volunteers are based in the Soysambu Conservancy, around three hours away from Nairobi. Everybody else works in the town of Nanyuki. During your time abroad, you’ll receive 24/7 support from local Projects Abroad staff.

Wildlife safaris are probably Kenya’s most famous tourist activity, so don’t miss out on the chance to see lions, rhinos, and buffalo in their natural habitat. Hiking opportunities abound, and adventurous souls can challenge themselves summiting Mount Kenya. A visit to the bustling capital of Nairobi is a must. You can check out some great museums, restaurants, and markets.

It was a wonderful experience. I will definitely be making a return to this place.

We had a lot of independence to do whatever we wanted during our time off, so I chose to experience a little of everything. I was able to do something different every day and weekend. Throughout my time there, I had the opportunity to explore the market in town which had clothes and food everywhere you looked, went on a hike on Mount Kenya which allowed me to get a small glimpse of the natural beauty that Kenya has to offer, take a trip to a different town called Nyeri, and spend quality time with the other volunteers going for dinners or swimming.

At the healthcare centre, I was able to experience first-hand and learn more about diseases and conditions that I have learned about in classes at my university.

Casie S

Some activities I’d help with in the classroom included tutoring the children, grading papers for the teacher, or designing art projects for students during downtime. Activities I helped with in the occupational therapy room included helping the children walk between activities and participating in play activities with the children.

Emily O

It was a great experience for me to learn and see how things worked in Kenya. I enjoyed learning from the occupational therapists and I was pleased that they were eager to learn from me too.

Esme D

I really did feel like my volunteering in Kenya had a small impact on something greater, but I would be so happy if the impact I made was even a tiny fraction as big as the impact Kenya had on me.

Alisa K

The hardest part was definitely to leave. I miss every single part of Kenya, the volunteers, staff members and the joyful local people, to whom I grew very attached to. It makes me want to continue volunteering and reinforced my love to travel. Thank you, Projects Abroad, for such good memories and for making my dream come true.

Cameron S

Doing your part with something like Projects Abroad is so important. Traveling is great, but the volunteering aspect of traveling, learning the language, the local culture… I think that’s much more valuable.

Zainab A

We organised safaris, trips to other cities such as Nakuru and Nairobi. We used the public transport for travel (tuktuks and matatus) and hired a safari car for some of the activities. We also attended cultural shows, which helped us gain a better insight into Kenyan culture and traditions.

Jessica K

I had always been interested in volunteering abroad, as travelling had opened my eyes to see what is really out there in the world. I decided to look up organisations that would allow me to go on such a mission with the best safety and care while on my trip. My parents weren’t very certain at first about letting me go on my own at the age of 17 to Africa, but after reading through continuous satisfactory reviews for Projects Abroad, we were certain that this organisation was the perfect choice for my trip.

Adam O

If you get the opportunity to go on one of these trips, seize it, as it will open your eyes to a whole world full of experiences that you just can’t see from the comfort of your home.

Christopher O

I would like to mention the Projects Abroad staff who were so friendly and helpful to me and the other volunteers throughout our time abroad.

Map & Location

Welcome to the “Cradle of Humanity” and a land of contrasts. Here, snow-capped mountains meet rolling savannahs, where lions roam and elephants graze. While famous for safari experiences, there’s much more to life in Kenya.

Home to the Maasai Mara National Park and the second-tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya, this East African gem is a bucket list item for nature lovers worldwide. Witness the Great Migration, taste delicious coffee, and be welcomed into a traditional way of life.

Nanyuki

In central Kenya, three hours north of Nairobi, lies the charming town of Nanyuki, the gateway to Mount Kenya. Home to about 70,000 residents, Nanyuki enjoys a cool climate and serves as a base for eager mountain climbers.

Nanyuki has a mix of modern amenities and natural beauty. The town is surrounded by wildlife conservancies, offering popular game drives and safaris, but is also steeped in history. It is famous for its markets, British colonial heritage, and sitting exactly on the equator.

Soysambu

The Soysambu Conservancy, located in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, is a vast wildlife haven of over 48,000 acres on the shores of Lake Elementaita. It protects a diverse ecosystem, including grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the lake itself.

Soysambu is home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and over 450 bird species. With stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and commitment to animal protection, Soysambu is the perfect place for real conservation work.
