Rashae H

During my time at the University Hospital, I worked alongside a variety of brilliant women. The bond I made with these women is what allowed me to act as a midwife, and even relocate to a few other wards, including surgical and radiology to assist with various needs.

Christina D

I am in the process of applying to Midwifery programmes in the US. Projects Abroad allowed me to expand my experiences to Arusha, Tanzania, (…) and I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Molly P

Having a year before the start of my degree in midwifery, I decided to start a midwifery placement with Projects Abroad. I thought the project would give me vital experience and prepare me for the start of my course back in the UK.

Options for Midwifery projects

No matter what level you are, we adapt your midwifery placement to match your requirements and goals. You can join if:

  • You want pre-midwifery experience before university
  • You want to do a midwifery elective placement overseas
  • You want more practical experience after graduating as a midwife or nurse
  • You want to go abroad as an experienced midwife to give back through maternity volunteer work

Our midwifery placements go a long way in supporting your career as a midwife, by adding relevant work experience to your CV and demonstrating your commitment to healthcare around the world!

How to get Midwifery Work Experience

Most of our midwifery placements are open to people aged 16 and over. To get midwifery work experience abroad, all you need to do is check that you meet the requirements for the Midwifery Internship of your choice, and fill in the application form. Our Project Experts are here to assist if you need help finding a programme that meets your needs and goals.

Having this kind of midwifery work experience will:

  • Strengthen your CV and help you stand out from the crowd
  • Give you great discussion points in interviews and essays
  • Help you find out if a career in midwifery is what you really want to pursue (especially useful for younger students researching courses at university!)
  • Let you branch out in your career and try something different

At your project, you’ll work under the guidance of a medical professional, and our staff will be there for you whenever you need them. In most cases, you’ll also be able to participate in healthcare outreaches, where you can do more hands-on work, like measuring blood sugar levels for patients.

Outreaches are one of the most rewarding aspects of our medical projects, as they yield direct benefits for the communities we work in. For example, if you do a blood sugar test that leads to a diabetes diagnosis, we refer the patient for further treatment and monitor their progress at future outreaches.

What will I gain from midwifery volunteering abroad?

Our placements give you the opportunity to gain international midwifery work experience in a developing country.

In addition to adding relevant work experience to your CV, here are further benefits you can expect from midwifery volunteering overseas:

  • Observe diseases and conditions affecting mothers and newborns first-hand that you might not see in your home country
  • Hone soft skills such as communication, leadership, time-management, resilience, organisation, and teamwork
  • Gain more in-depth work experience than you might receive back home
  • Develop a global mindset as you learn from and work with people of different cultures and backgrounds
  • Grow your confidence as you broaden your horizons

All of the above will also enhance your UCAS applications and your personal development.

How are our Midwifery Internships different?

At Projects Abroad, our first aim is to benefit the communities we work in. You can be assured that your internship is ethical, well supported, and part of a better future. Here’s just a few elements of our work that set it apart from other internship programmes:

Real work with trained professionals

On our internships, you’ll work alongside real healthcare professionals. You can observe them in their everyday work, ask questions, and hear more about their experiences. You’re likely to get more insights into the frontline of medical care than in your home country.

A tailored approach

We’re often able to tailor your internship to your interests. You can work in more than one department or focus on one particular area, or experience outreach work in the local community.

Our Medicine & Healthcare Policy

We take the safety of our volunteers, interns, and the people they work with very seriously. That’s why we’ve put in place a comprehensive Medical Ethics Policy.
