Embark on an off-the-beaten-path jungle trek through the lush Kulen Mountains. Explore ancient ruins, meet friendly villagers, and learn vital bushcraft skills in this pristine setting.

Bid farewell to Cambodia with a visit to the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat, a perfect finale to your adventure.

Week 1: Vietnam’s culture and traditions

Your Southeast Asian adventure begins in the traditional heart of Vietnam, Hanoi.

After getting to know your fellow travellers, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about Vietnamese philosophy and religion. Together, you’ll visit important temples, take in a traditional water puppet show, and explore different historical districts with the opportunity to learn some Vietnamese!

After two days in the metropolis, it’s time to retreat to the mountains. This week provides a unique opportunity to learn from the ‘White Thai’ Muong and Hmong minority groups and support a women’s social enterprise creating sustainable fabrics.

Explore your new rural surroundings in Mai Chau by cycling through the rice fields, diving into expansive caves, and kayaking on Hoa Ban Lake. You’ll even get to ride a traditional bamboo raft and hike through stunning nature reserves!

To round out your first week, you’ll play traditional games and practice bamboo dances at your homestay, as well as learning how to cook traditional Vietnamese dishes.

Week 2: Ha Long Bay to Phnom Penh

Your second week kicks off with an unforgettable overnight voyage through Ha Long Bay. Board a boat and immerse yourself in the breathtaking maze of limestone karst islands. Enjoy a variety of activities, from kayaking in the bay to exploring large caves and watching the sunset over the stunning landscape. In the evening, try your hand at squid fishing or join a lively karaoke party before settling in for the night on the boat. Wake up to a peaceful sunrise tai chi class on the deck, surrounded by the serene beauty of the bay.

It’s time to return to Hanoi, where you will explore the rich history of Vietnam by visiting the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a grand complex of palaces, temples, and towers that served as the home to emperors and rulers for over a millennium. Then, head to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Military History Museum to uncover the country’s tumultuous past and the wars that shaped its future. In the evening, witness a parade of soldiers outside the Mausoleum.

Embark on a scenic bus journey to Bai Dinh Pagoda, a sprawling complex of Buddhist pagodas, before heading to Ninh Binh for a traditional paddle boat ride through serene rivers and stunning caves. Cycle through lush rice fields and hike to panoramic viewpoints of the breathtaking valley below. Conclude your day by returning to Hanoi for a relaxing evening before your departure to Phnom Penh.

Wee 3: Heritage & Conservation

After taking a short flight to Cambodia you’ll arrive in the vibrant capital, Phnom Penh. Explore the stunning Royal Palace before delving into the country’s history with visits to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. These sobering yet crucial sites offer a powerful reminder of Cambodia’s resilience and enduring spirit.

Experience Cambodia’s conservation efforts firsthand as you visit sanctuaries dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating trafficked and endangered animals. Learn about breeding programmes for species like Siamese Crocodiles, Malayan Sun Bears, Moon Bears, and Asiatic Black Bears. You’ll also have the chance to assist in preparing food and hiding treats for the bears in their enclosures.

Next, travel by bus to the coastal city of Sihanoukville, where a speedboat will take you to the remote island of Koh Rong. Known for its dense jungle and tranquil beaches, the island offers the perfect opportunity to unwind. Relax on the soft white sand or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. In the evening, witness the magical glow of bioluminescent plankton sparkling in the warm sea.

After returning to Phnom Penh, you will conclude your week by supporting community development projects in local schools. Interact with Cambodian children, helping to make a positive impact on their lives. You’ll also explore Silk Island, learning about the ancient art of silk-making, and enjoy a traditional Khmer boxing match, immersing yourself in local culture.

Week 4: Wilderness & Ancient Wonders

Begin your week by visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, where you’ll learn about the sustainable fishing practices that communities have relied on for generations. Discover how they adapt to the changing waters as climate change impacts their way of life. In the evening, immerse yourself in Cambodia’s vibrant culture at PHARE, a social enterprise dedicated to promoting art and culture among disadvantaged communities. Enjoy a captivating performance from their award-winning circus troupe.

Next, embark on an adventurous jungle hike, venturing off the beaten path to uncover hidden ruins and connect with rural villagers and monks. The group will set up camp, sleep in bivouac hammocks, and learn survival techniques in this wild environment from experienced trek leaders.

Later, explore the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm on a guided tour, where you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the Khmer Empire. Wander through the jungle and discover other ancient ruins at your own pace. On your final day, soak in the atmosphere of this historic site, watching traditional Apsara dance performances as you reflect on your incredible journey.

What are Gap Components?

Our Gap Components are the DNA of our philosophy around transformational travel.

Each Gap Programme contains five essential components:

Adventure

Leave your comfort zone in the dust! We’re talking about hiking epic trails, rafting down rapids, dune buggies, and ziplining through incredible landscapes. This is more than just an adrenaline rush. These adventures are designed to build your confidence, strengthen your friendships, and give you life skills that will stay with you long after you unpack your bags.

Community

Ready to make a difference? Get involved and give back to the incredible places you’ll visit. Roll up your sleeves and join beach cleanups, help protect endangered forests and wildlife, or teach, build, and lend a hand in local communities. You’ll learn about giving back, see the world through a whole new lens, and leave a positive footprint, wherever you tread.

Exploration

Time to go wild! Picture camping under the stars, spotting rare animals, trekking into the remote wilderness, and experiencing life in a homestay. It won’t always be easy, but that’s the point. These programmes are designed to build your resilience and ignite your sense of adventure. You’ll push your limits, ditch the digital world, and stretch yourself further than you ever thought possible.

People & Planet

Ready to go beyond sightseeing? Dive headfirst into the real issues facing our planet, learn from local experts, and immerse yourself in vibrant communities. Get hands-on, open your heart, and experience different cultures for yourself. These programmes will shake up your perspective, inspire you to act, and help you understand your own place in this awesome, interconnected world.

This gap year is your chance to invest in yourself. Homestays, workshops, excursions… these aren’t just activities; they’re stepping stones to uncovering what makes you tick, setting goals, and building the skills that will help you become the best version of yourself. Think boosted confidence, newfound independence, and a global mindset that’ll open doors down the road.
