Volunteer with children in Africa

Support childhood development

Childcare centres across Africa vary in size, supporting everyone from babies to young people up to 18 years old. Local teams do incredible work, but individual attention can be limited. By joining a Childcare Project, you’ll work alongside local staff to provide vital educational support, care, and friendship.

You’ll help deliver the daily mental stimulation that builds healthy social skills and self-confidence. This isn’t just about the contribution you make; it’s about who you become. You’ll return home more independent, more confident, and with a deeper global perspective.

Explore our childcare projects below to see how you can get involved.

Supported, all the way

Joining a Childcare Project in Africa is an extraordinary opportunity to test your potential.

You’ll use and develop your unique talents, skills, and knowledge to support local teams. Activities range from teaching early literacy to playing educational games.

You don’t need prior childcare experience or qualifications to join, as support is available on every step of your journey.

To help you succeed, we run regular workshops where you can:

  • collaborate on exciting new educational activities
  • share creative ideas with fellow volunteers
  • discuss day-to-day challenges with our local staff

Volunteer in a day care centre or kindergarten in Africa

Kindergartens across Africa are vibrant spaces full of children eager to learn. Joining a Childcare Project means you’ll collaborate directly with local educators. Together, you’ll design daily activities that spark curiosity and capture young interests. You can introduce creative art projects, educational games, and songs.

You can also support local teams in busy day care centres. Here, you’ll work with children of all ages, from babies to teenagers. Your day might involve preparing nutritious meals, teaching early literacy skills, or sharing hygiene practices.

This experience will challenge you to step beyond the familiar. You won’t just learn about a new culture; you’ll build a true global perspective. By participating responsibly, you’ll return home more confident, more independent, and clearer about your direction.

Volunteering in African orphanages

Over the years, our volunteers have worked with children at orphanages and residential care homes in Africa. They have done incredible work at these placements, improving living conditions there and creating opportunities for children by supporting their education and care.

However, we have decided to move our focus away from orphanages and homes toward community and family-based care. This is because we believe stable family environments are best for the children we work with.

Read more about orphanage volunteering and our position on it.

This means that instead of volunteering in orphanages in Africa, volunteers will work in placements like day care centres, kindergartens, and schools, or support groups for the elderly and mothers and babies. This allows us to build stronger relationships with local communities and – most importantly – help families stay together and flourish.
