Global Citizenship Framework

Structured learning provides greater growth

Our pilot initiative to test the Framework involved over 350 participants: 

• 42% followed the Global Citizenship Framework.
• 58% did not.

We asked everyone involved the same questions.

Each participant scored themselves on a scale of 1 to 5 against a series of questions which measured their global citizenship competencies.

They rated how true they thought the following statements were, comparing their knowledge before and after their experience with Projects Abroad:

(1 = Not at all true; 5 = Completely true): 

1. I understand how global issues (such as poverty, health, or education) affect people’s daily lives in other countries.
2. I feel confident communicating with people whose culture or background is different from mine.
3. I try to understand situations from other people’s perspectives, not just my own.
4. I think carefully about how my choices can positively or negatively affect other people and the environment.
5. I am comfortable learning and working alongside people whose experiences are very different from mine.
6. I regularly make choices in my daily life based on my awareness of global issues (Before); This experience has changed how I think about the choices I make in my daily life (After).

Results from our pilot

Across all measures, 93% of participants reported a better global citizenship competencies after their experience with Projects Abroad.

However, structured learning made that experience even more powerful. Our pilot found that those who followed our Global Citizenship Framework saw 23% greater growth in global citizenship competencies compared to those who did not follow the Framework.

Our pilot confirmed that international experience works—as a tool for developing global citizenship competencies—but structured learning makes this experience even more powerful.
