For those drawn to the deep ocean, becoming a marine conservation volunteer allows you to protect fragile coral reefs, track endangered sea turtles, and combat plastic pollution in marine sanctuaries. Alternatively, if you prefer terrestrial ecosystems, wildlife conservation volunteering places you on the front lines of safeguarding endangered species, restoring native habitats, and working alongside local communities to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
Here are some of our most popular conservation volunteer programmes:
- Animal Conservation Volunteer Work in Kenya: Conduct surveys, monitor wildlife, plus protect the endangered Rothschild Giraffe and other African wildlife.
- Giant Tortoise & Sea Lion Conservation in the Galapagos Islands: Feed and monitor the gentle Galapagos Giant Tortoise with exclusive access to the Galapagos National Park.
- Amazon Jungle Conservation Volunteer Programme in Peru: Help rehabilitate and reforest, conserving diverse species and their habitats. Engage in hands-on fieldwork and sustainable farming.

What are the best countries for volunteer abroad conservation programs?
Countries like Costa Rica, Thailand, Spain, Peru, Nepal, and Cambodia are premier destinations for environmental volunteering due to their rich biodiversity and established conservation infrastructures. These regions offer diverse, high-impact projects ranging from sea turtle monitoring to Amazonian rainforest restoration.
One of our most popular destinations, world-famous for its unique ecosystem is the Galapagos Islands. A real “bucket-list” destination, it was the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, the landmark publication that put forward his theory of evolution and revolutionised our understanding of our natural world.
Do I need prior experience or scientific qualifications to participate?
No, most standard conservation programmes do not require prior scientific experience or degrees, as comprehensive on-site training is provided by field experts. However, specialised tasks like research scuba diving or veterinary assistance may require specific pre-existing certifications or background knowledge.
On our diving projects, you can earn a diving certification (PADI, SSI, or CMAS)—which is included in your project fee.
We also have dedicated teen conservation projects, for those who are aged 14 to 18 with no experience.
Can I do a conservation trip with my family?
Absolutely — family conservation holidays are a popular and rewarding alternative to traditional trips abroad. You can enjoy a truly memorable bonding experience while:
- exploring new cultures
- contributing towards positive global change
- providing vital learning opportunities to your children
- being fully looked after by dedicated Projects Abroad staff

How do volunteer conservation programs ensure ethical and sustainable impacts?
Ethical programmes partner directly with local communities and conservation scientists to ensure that projects fulfil long-term ecological needs rather than short-term tourist demands.
They maintain transparent operations, strictly adhere to wildlife welfare guidelines, and measure their ecological outcomes consistently.
