Family Volunteering Holidays Abroad

Here at Projects Abroad, we have many years’ experience arranging volunteer holidays for families. We know how best to organise a trip that takes into account all your needs. However, we also keep in mind that there is no such thing as a “typical” family, and as such work hard to personalise your project and accommodation to suit your situation. And in each country we work in, we have trained and resident staff available to support your family 24/7.

Can't find what you're looking for?

We’d be happy to talk about creating a custom project for you. Most of our staff have been volunteers themselves, so they’re well placed to answer your questions, big or small.

Is volunteering abroad right for my family?

Volunteering abroad with your family is an excellent way to travel with purpose, and experience a more meaningful holiday. You will get the chance to work together to make a positive impact in a disadvantaged community, and get involved in practical work while exploring a new culture.

Indeed, volunteering allows you to experience a different side of a country that you wouldn’t normally see as a tourist. You’ll interact with locals and learn about their customs, participating in valuable cross-cultural exchange. For children and teenagers, volunteering as a family will play a big part in teaching them the value of altruism, and the power we have to help one another. They will also get to see the results of their hard work, which is in itself a rewarding experience.

Create memories that will last a lifetime, bonding as a family on this unique shared experience.

What type of projects can a family do?

We have a number of programmes that allow for everybody to take part, no matter their age or skill level. This is ideal for families volunteering with children of different ages. However, you aren’t limited to these options! If there’s a specific project you have in mind, contact us and we will do our best to arrange something that works for you.

  • Childcare: Childcare Projects involve a wide range of different tasks, from basic renovation to organising fun games and educational activities at disadvantaged kindergartens and day care centres.
  • Teaching: From helping out in the classroom to running extra-curricular activities, there is plenty of scope for everyone to get involved.
  • Sports: Families can choose to coach a specific sport, or arrange physical education activities for children during and after school. There is also room to combine this project with a Childcare programme, for some variety.

If these don’t appeal to you, take a look at our full range of projects for more options.

How does it work?

If you know exactly what you want to do and you’re ready to go ahead, you can apply and we will start making the arrangements. If you’re unsure, have some questions or need some guidance, contact us and one of our experienced Programme Advisors will be able to help.

Our projects run year-round, and families are welcome to join at any time, for however long suits them. You don’t need any previous experience to join one of our placements – all we require is enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved! There will also be time to explore the local attractions, on weekends and after your placement has finished during the week. You can also take time before your project starts or after it finishes to enjoy some travel in-country.

Want to volunteer as a couple? Friends, significant others, and husbands/wives are all welcome. We can arrange placements where you can live and work together, or volunteer on separate projects in-country but still share accommodation.

Can I bring my children?

We can accept volunteers aged four years and older with their families. Contact us if your child will be under the age of four at the time you want to travel and we can discuss the options available.

Ages 4-14: Children between 4-14 years old can be accommodated and work with their parent(s) for a reduced fee.

Ages 15+: If your child is aged 15 or older, he/she may volunteer without the accompaniment of a parent at the standard per person price.

We also offer a 5% discount to immediate family members traveling together. This discount applies to adults and children aged 15+.

Where can I go?

We can usually arrange projects for families in all destinations except China and Costa Rica. In Jamaica families are welcome; however, children cannot go to work with their parents here, so one parent needs to look after the children, or child care can be arranged.
