The best possible advice I can give a future volunteer is that volunteering with Projects Abroad is an adventure of a lifetime so don’t hold back.

Haley H

To all potential volunteers: just go already! A once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits you. I promise you, Projects Abroad is not too good to be true.

Jordin T

When people say how amazing Costa Rican people are they aren't exaggerating. Everywhere we went locals greeted us with open arms and I always felt very safe while I was there.

Matt L

I left Costa Rica extremely sad to leave but glad and so grateful to have been allowed to experience such a vibrant community and such a perfect way of life

May H

I will never forget the laughs the children and I shared and the way they shout “hola Teacher May” across the corridors

Kathleen W

If you have the chance to go to Barra Honda, I would highly recommend you take it and start an adventure of your own. It is one you are not likely to forget. Pura vida!

Katie E

The Costa Rican saying ‘Pura Vida’, meaning ‘pure life’ sums up Costa Rica as a whole. Everyone and everything made Costa Rica the epitome of a paradise, and it was this experience that has created very special memories for me.

Aphra E

I would say the most important thing is don’t take my word for it: see for yourself.

Stephanie K

I went to Costa Rica hoping to change my life and do something meaningful. I accomplished that and so much more.

Skai K

I have realized how easy it is to get caught up in city life, and this trip helped me appreciate what the world has to offer

Julie H

That was the thing with the Projects Abroad employees; they were always there to help. Whether it was noon or midnight, one hundred degrees or eighty, they never hesitated to assist us.

Raphael H

Our trip to Costa Rica was truly the trip of lifetime particularly when considering the entirely new experiences which we had and the wide variety of people who we met.

Norma M

It was only by working abroad that the realisation dawned upon me: through volunteering, we all have the power to change someone’s life, even in the smallest possible way. It may not seem like the work we do matters at the time, but it has a good impact on those who we are helping.

Map & Location

Thought to be one of the safest countries in Latin America, Costa Rica is a pioneer of sustainable tourism with a gorgeous coastline, incredible active volcanoes, and up-close wildlife encounters. Here, “Pura Vida” is more than just a saying — it’s a way of life.

More than one-quarter of Costa Rica is protected national parks or reserves and about half of it is covered in rainforest. It is also one of only a handful of countries with no army! It’s the perfect place for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Camaquiri

The Camaquiri Conservation Initiative is a rainforest conservation hub surrounded by incredible biodiversity. Just a few hours from San José, it offers direct access to pristine ecosystems full of birds, amphibians, reptiles, and countless plants.

Camaquiri is known as a centre for conservation and research due to its remote location, but also has comfortable amenities. With its warm tropical climate and abundant wildlife, it’s the perfect setting for important rainforest exploration year-round.

Barra del Colorado

Tucked away on Costa Rica’s northeastern coast, Barra del Colorado is a remote fishing village and one of the country’s largest wildlife refuges. The area is rich in rivers, lagoons, and mangroves, with a tropical climate that stays warm year-round.

Despite its seclusion, it’s easily reached by boat or car on dirt roads and rivers. Barra del Colorado is famous for its sea turtles, wetlands, and marine life, making it a core destination for marine conservation efforts.

Monteverde

Monteverde, high in the misty mountains of Costa Rica, is an evergreen region of cloud forests — a paradise for nature and animal lovers. It has a tropical climate with a constant haze of refreshing, cooling fog in the air, and is incredibly biodiverse.

Walk through the forest canopy on suspended bridges and enjoy breathtaking views. See sloths lounging on tree branches, hear the howls of monkeys echo through the trees, and enjoy endless, colourful birdwatching.

Heredia

Heredia, located just 20 minutes north of the capital San Jose, is known as the “City of Flowers.” This charming city of fewer than 20,000 residents has a relaxed atmosphere with beautiful parks and gardens, and enjoys a cool, spring-like climate year-round.

Wander through the historic streets lined with colourful colonial buildings or head further out to visit nearby coffee plantations, national parks, and volcanoes. It’s the perfect place for exploring the natural beauty of Costa Rica!

Your Arrival Made Easy
