What you can expect

Based at the El Naranjo Reserve in La Peñita de Jaltemba, this programme gives you hands-on experience in sea turtle protection and wildlife conservation along Mexico’s stunning Pacific coastline, combined with rich cultural immersion.

Sea turtle and wildlife conservation in action

You will work with several endangered sea turtle species, including: 

• Black turtles
• Olive Ridley sea turtles
• Hawksbill sea turtles
• Leatherback sea turtles

Your tasks will depend on the needs of the reserve at the time of your trip but can include:

• Hatchery care and egg relocation: Spend your mornings working at the reserve’s turtle hatchery, relocating vulnerable eggs from the beach, caring for newly emerged hatchlings, and maintaining the nesting corrals.
• Nighttime turtle patrols: Venture out on nocturnal beach walks to locate nesting female sea turtles, log scientific data, and safely transfer egg clutches to the protected hatchery.
• Hatchling releases: Experience the reward of releasing newly hatched sea turtles into the ocean and guiding them safely to the surf.
• Crocodile sanctuary support: Work alongside sanctuary staff to clean enclosures, monitor behaviour, and assist with feeding resident crocodiles.
• Coastal ecosystem clean-ups and wildlife walks: Join guided nature walks to identify native bird species and flora, and clear litter from local beaches to safeguard marine habitats.

Cultural immersion and local traditions

Connect deeply with Mexican heritage throughout your stay. Participate in a hands-on workshop to learn about traditional customs, music, and crafts, and relax with sunset beach trips to nearby Guayabitos. In Guadalajara, explore the vibrant streets and artisan markets of Tlaquepaque before celebrating your group’s conservation impact with a traditional dinner and live cultural show.

Coastal adventure and day trips

• Isla Coral snorkelling: Board a boat from Lo de Marcos for an island adventure, spotting coastal seabirds along the way before plunging into the calm shallows of Isla Coral to observe rich marine life, from curious pufferfish to resting sea turtles.
• Puerto Vallarta day trip: Discover the city’s rich history as you wander through Old Town, admire the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, sample authentic street snacks, and walk the sun-drenched Malecón boardwalk overlooking Banderas Bay.
• El Camopo waterfalls hike: Hike through the forest to El Camopo waterfalls and cool off with a swim in the natural freshwater pools beneath the falls.
