What you need to know

Overview

Are you a keen sportsman/woman? Do you enjoy working with children? Are you passionate about helping nurture their talents? Then, volunteering as a sports coach in Argentina is perfect for you!

We have partnered with a community sports initiative that provides free football and hockey lessons to children from impoverished families. Your role will be to build their confidence, develop their ability, and encourage them to keep fit.

It’s also an excellent opportunity for you to refine your own skills and gain experience in sports coaching. Don’t worry if you have little or no coaching experience. You will be working with local coaches who are dedicated to their programmes and very open to volunteers. They will help you in any way they can. Projects Abroad staff will also be there to help you.

This project runs throughout the year, so you can join at any time. Please contact us to discuss which dates work for you.

A Day in the Life

You will start your mornings with a hearty breakfast in your host family’s home. From here, you will make use of public transport to get to the Club Atlético Racing around 10 am. On your first day, our staff will show you how to get there.

The first two hours of your working day will be dedicated to meeting with the local teachers to help coordinate and plan coaching sessions. These meetings will also be a useful time to discuss team selections and match strategies.

At around 12 pm, you will get an hour and a half lunch break. If your host family lives close enough, you can head home to eat and rest for a bit. Alternatively, you will enjoy a packed lunch at the club.

As schools close for the day, children will start arriving at the club in the afternoon. This is when the fun begins! You will spend the rest of the day helping them develop basic skills and techniques. If you’re a football fanatic, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to share your passion here. However, there are also opportunities to coach basketball, hockey, swimming, and gymnastics.

You may be asked to help out at games on certain evenings and weekends or even join in a game yourself. However, you will also get plenty of free time to explore with your fellow volunteers and get to know your host family.

Cordoba is a vibrant city with loads of interesting restaurants to try out. If you have a whole weekend free, you can even head further up the coast for a trip. There are many adventures to be had!

Aims & Impact

The main aim of this project is to help disadvantaged youth learn important life skills through sports.

Sport in Argentina is extremely popular. There are so many children wishing to participate, but due to a lack of resources, opportunity is limited. The club we work with provides disadvantaged children with free lessons, giving them a chance to participate. We need your help to coach these children.

Through this project, you can dedicate your time, energy, and skills to coaching children and help them to improve their abilities and technique. You’ll find that every student is different. However, each one will greatly benefit from your coaching to improve their performance.

Join us in Argentina today to help improve the lives of young people through sport.

Activities

As a volunteer teaching sports in Argentina, you will work at a community sports initiative in Cordoba. They provide free training in various sports to children from disadvantaged families. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement.

  • Provide free sports lessons to children from disadvantaged families for three hours per day
  • Work with the local teacher to help coordinate and plan coaching sessions for two hours per day
  • Expand your horizons by learning new skills

Provide free sports lessons

The most important aspect of your time in Argentina is coaching young children. You will mainly teach football and basketball. There may also be opportunities to practise hockey, swimming, and gymnastics with the children.

Help the local teacher coordinate coaching sessions

You will work closely with local teachers to plan your coaching sessions. They know the children you will be working with very well and will be able to guide you in different approaches. They are also typically experienced coaches, so they will be able to offer you some invaluable insights.

Expand your horizons by learning new skills

Whether you have coaching experience or not, this project will offer loads of opportunities to broaden your skill set. Firstly, you will be working alongside experienced local coaches, who will be able to advise you on improving your own techniques. Secondly, living in Argentina is an excellent opportunity to learn Spanish or improve on your language skills if you already speak it.

Map & Location
Home of the tango, yerba mate, and Gaucho culture, Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world. From Andean peaks to Patagonian glaciers and incredible waterfalls, you’ll never run out of stunning sights and places to explore.

While Spanish is the official language, there is a strong Italian influence, reflecting its European heritage. Considered one of the safest counties in Latin America, Argentina offers adventure in abundance.

Cordoba

Cordoba, Argentina’s second-largest city, sits in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas mountains. This historic city blends Spanish colonial architecture with a youthful energy and is home to the oldest university in Argentina.

It is filled with busy bars, cafes, and restaurants that fuel its nightlife and it’s a popular choice for live music. With a pleasant climate, a flourishing arts scene, and access to both mountains and the plains, Cordoba has something for everyone.

Food & Accommodation

You will have everything you need for a fantastic experience in Argentina, including a place to sleep, three meals a day, and fresh drinking water. We’ll also pick you up from your host family and take you to and from your placement every day.

Experience the culture of Argentina from the comfort of your clean, safe, and secure host family home. Glide into the way of life and feel yourself effortlessly transform from tourist to local upon arrival.

Enjoy home-cooked meals, learn a recipe or two, practice your Spanish, and get the inside scoop on what’s good on your doorstep (and further from home). Whether you go solo, with friends, or stay with other Projects Abroad participants — you’ll feel part of the family in an instant.
