Midwifery in Togo is an exciting field. The placements are well-equipped by local standards, and will give you a full experience of midwifery practice in a developing country. As well as the opportunity to see different births progress, volunteers provide much-needed support to the women.
Your role will be that of an intern. As the midwifery profession in Togo is very different to what you are likely to be used to, you will first spend a minimum of a week observing. You may get a more hands on role if you are training to be a midwife, and have demonstrated your knowledge to the team. You will then be able to help carry out consultations, treat pregnant women and assist with births.
You will be placed in the maternity department of Lomé’s University hospital or one of the more rural medical centres where women come to have their babies. Staff will be happy to receive you and have you help them. You will have a dedicated Projects Abroad Medical Coordinator, who will act as your supervisor. They will be on hand to make sure you have a worthwhile time volunteering in Togo.
Requirements for Midwifery Volunteers
Volunteers on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
While volunteering on a Midwifery Project in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families where you will experience the real day-to-day lives of the local Togolese community. You will be able to meet and socialise with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.
You can join the Midwifery project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or medical centre please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
